Rumba

rumba dancers

Rumba is a slow, romantic Latin dance that originated in Cuba. It is characterized by its smooth hip movements and is often danced to romantic music.

The rumba is often called the “dance of love,” celebrated for its slow, sensual rhythm and expressive hip movements.

Originating from Afro-Cuban traditions and evolving into a ballroom style in the early 20th century, the rumba blends African rhythms with Spanish melodies to create a uniquely romantic character. Danced in 4/4 time with a step pattern of slow–quick–quick, it emphasizes the distinctive “Cuban motion”—a rolling hip action produced by bending and straightening the knees. Unlike progressive dances that travel around the floor, rumba is non-progressive, keeping partners close and focused on connection, expression, and storytelling through movement. Its music, typically between 100–120 beats per minute, carries a soft, syncopated beat that allows dancers to highlight both intimacy and drama. Today, rumba is a staple of both social and competitive ballroom dance, admired for its ability to convey passion, elegance, and emotional depth in every step.

In our beginner Rumba classes, you will learn the basic steps and techniques to help you feel comfortable on the dance floor.

The Rumba is typically danced in a 4/4 time signature, with a slow-quick-quick rhythm that makes it easy to follow.

As you progress, you will learn more advanced patterns and styling to enhance your Rumba dancing.

The Rumba is a popular choice for weddings and social events, making it a valuable dance to learn.

Cha Cha

A couple dancing cha-chaThe Chacha is a lively, flirtatious Latin dance that originated in Cuba. It is characterized by its syncopated rhythm and playful hip movements.

The Chacha evolved from the Mambo in the 1950s and quickly gained popularity in ballroom dance competitions.

The name Chacha comes from the sound of the shuffling steps that dancers make on the floor.

It is typically danced in 4/4 time, with a basic step pattern of two slow steps followed by three quick steps.

Popularized by musicians like Tito Puente and Pérez Prado, the Chacha became a staple of Latin music and dance.

Today, the cha cha is a staple in International Latin and American Rhythm ballroom categories, as well as a popular choice for dance classes, weddings, and social events. Its mix of accessibility and showmanship makes it perfect for beginners learning their first Latin dance, while still offering endless opportunities for advanced dancers to showcase creativity and style.

Jive

A couple dancing jiveJive is a lively and energetic dance that is part of the swing family. It is characterized by its fast-paced footwork, playful style, and upbeat music.

Jive originated in the United States in the early 20th century, evolving from African American dance styles such as the Charleston and Lindy Hop.

It gained popularity in the 1940s and 1950s, becoming a staple of rock and roll music and youth culture.

Jive is typically danced in 4/4 time, with a strong emphasis on the first beat of each measure.

Its music is fast and upbeat, often featuring a strong rhythm section and catchy melodies.

Jive is known for its lively kicks, spins, and turns, making it a fun and exciting dance to learn and perform.
