Waltz

dancers dancing waltzThe Waltz is a graceful, flowing ballroom dance performed in 3/4 time, known for its elegant rise-and-fall motion and romantic turning steps.

The Waltz evolved in the 18th century from Austrian and German folk dances like the Ländler and Allemande

The name Waltz is derived from the German word walzen, meaning “to roll” or “to revolve”.

It was the first dance to feature close body contact between partners, which shocked polite society at the time.

Popularized by composers like Johann Strauss and Franz Lanner, it became the signature ballroom dance of the 19th century.

Quickstep

quickstep dancersQuickstep is a fast-paced, energetic ballroom dance known for its light footwork, syncopated rhythms, and joyful flair, making it a dazzling highlight in competitive and social dance settings.

As the name suggests, this dance is quick and there are a lot of steps.

Developed in the 1920s in England, Quickstep emerged from a fusion of Foxtrot, Charleston, Peabody, and One-Step dances.

Quickstep was shaped by the upbeat jazz music of the ragtime era, which demanded faster, more dynamic movement.

Though it shares roots with Foxtrot, Quickstep evolved into a distinct style with its own tempo, figures, and flair.

Quickstep is often thought of as the “joy” dance of modern dancing. While the basic figures are quite simple, the tempo of the music and the whole character of the dance seem to invite a carefree interpretation of its bright rhythm. The beginner will find the basic steps easy to learn and easy to fit the music. The advanced dancer will discover that the music lends itself to an infinite variety of steps.
